Enhanced resource assessment and atmospheric monitoring of the research wind farm WiValdi

Abstract Prior to the installation of wind turbines at Krummendeich research farm (referred as WiValdi) which is developed by German Aerospace Center (DLR), we conducted measurements with a Doppler lidar (DWL) and microwave radiometer (MWR) for 16 months, starting in November 2020. The remote sensing data was validated against radiosonde short-term campaign September 2021. We present statistical analysis speed, direction, shear veer derived from DWL well static stability temperature retrievals MWR comparison model results New European Wind Atlas (NEWA). observational 2021 shows higher occurence rate winds northwest longer-term statistics NEWA (2011-2018). From overall statistics, cases low-level jets (LLJ) are detected separated. LLJs appear 49% observed nights predominantly conditions seaward direction. LLJ increases rotor swept area thus potential loads significantly. Future WiValdi will allow analyse effects such load on detail.
